Moon Dough Review

I recently received the Moon Dough Barnyard from TeamMom.  I set it a side for a bit and saved it for a time when my 4 year old was missing his brother and sisters while they were at school. After four days without his siblings he was getting a bit bored so I pulled it out last Friday. It was a huge hit.

My son loves to play with action figures, so I was concerned that this type of toy might bore him. However, as you can see from the photo above he simply used his action figures with the Moon Dough animals. Superman was the farmer for his animals.

When I first opened the packs of Moon Dough I was very surprised by the feel of it.  We had played with Moon Sand before so I was expecting it to feel like that, but it didn’t.  It was much lighter and almost felt like styro-foam.  It is also wheat free and hypo-allergenic.  The best thing is it never dries out.

The barn has animal molds in the roof where you put in the Moon Dough. This is great work for the coordination of little fingers since the dough has to be pushed down. Then they turn the crank on the back of the barn and out rolls an adorable horse, cow, sheep, or hen. The detail on the animals are amazing – you can see their facial features well and the sheep come out with cute swirls on their sides.

I was concerned that they would fall apart easily, but one fell on the floor and it didn’t break. When it did break apart, it just meant that it was time to make a new animal.

The kit also comes with a hay and fence mold. The Fence mold worked great and had terrific detail, but we couldn’t get the hay to come out.

So if you’re on the look out for a unique and fun gift for that 2-4 year-old in your life, I highly recommend Moon Dough. It comes in eight colors: Blue, Green, White, Orange, Purple, Red, Pink, and Yellow. There are a number of play sets available too.

Moon Dough is available at Toys “R” Us, Target, Walmart, Kmart, Amazon.com, A.C. Moore, Michaels, and eToys and retails for about $19.99.

I think Moon Dough is a big hot mess! It crumbles all over the place. Crayola Model Magic and Playdough are much better products, and there is much less mess associated with these. Moon Dough has been banished forever from our house! This is now an outside toy – outside in the garbage that is.
