Aldi’s–A Great Place to Get Spices & a Low Carb Pork recipe for you

Since I’ve had to change my diet due to my pregnancy, I’ve been doing quite a bit of searching for tasty Low Carb recipes that both my family and I will enjoy.  I was very excited to find a great recipe site called Yummly.com.  On Yummly, you can choose different criteria for recipes that fit your needs instead of just entering an ingredient.

So in my case, I can limit the recipes shown to how many carbs I want and can also pick the time it takes to make the meal.  Other limiting options are Allergies, Specific Diets, Calories and much more.  That way you don’t end up looking at recipes that you won’t be able to eat.

One thing I have found is that the Low Carb recipes are packed full of spices.  Probably because they are so low in carbs and add such flavor.   I don’t know about you, but I hate paying $5 for a little tiny package of Spices at the Grocery store (and that’s even with a sale.)  In the past, I’ve gone to Sam’s or Gorton’s foods and bought the big huge jars of spices.  However, I have found that I don’t use them quick enough and they loose some of their flavoring over time, which in the end doesn’t save money.

So I was really happy to see that at Aldi’s you can get medium size bottles of many spices for only 99 cents apiece.  I recently picked up Cumin, Italian Seasoning, Oregano, Chili Powder, and Red Pepper Flakes all for 99 cents each.  That’s just a fraction of what my store offers.  This has certainly made my Low Carb cooking a bit easier and less expensive.

So if you are in need of spices and have a Aldi’s near you, be sure to check it out.

If you eat low carb or just want a tasty Pork recipe, here is one I recently tried that I found on Yummly.com.  I changed it up a bit to fit our tastes, but not so much it changed the nutrition facts too much.  One big change I made was to significantly reduce the amount of black pepper.  I have found that can be a bit overpowering for the kids.

Pork Tenderloin with Tomato and  Pepper Sauce 

(4 servings) – 9 grams of carbs per serving and 36 grams of Protein

Olive Oil (rounded the pan once)
1 tsp garlic powder (I bought some fresh garlic, but actually found I prefer the powder)
1 lb Pork Tenderloin (removed fat and cut into thin strips)
14 1/2 oz can Diced Tomatoes (I used Muir Glen because they don’t have sugar)
1 can Green Chiles – (I added these because I didn’t have any Tomatoes with Chili)
1 tsp dried Basil
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp Pepper
1/2 cup water
1 cups Green Bell Pepper
1/2 Onion diced

  1. Round Large Skillet with Olive Oil and turn on medium-high heat.  Put your Strips of Pork in and sprinkle with Garlic Powder.  Cook, turning occasionally, until browned on both sides
  2. Stir in tomatoes and chilies and season with Basil, Salt and pepper.  Cook until a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cover.
  3. Meanwhile, heat water in a nonstick skillet over medium heat.  Cook green pepper and onion in boiling hot water until tender-crisp.  Then stir them into the pork and tomato mixture.  Continue cooking until pork tenderloin strips are no longer pink.  About 50 minutes

I served it with brown rice and a Romaine Salad (which have become a daily filler here.)  Fortunately, Aldis also had Romaine Hearts 3 packs for only $2.
