Giant Eagle’s New Coupon Policy

Sure enough, the rumors about Giant Eagle’s new coupon policy were true.  I just checked and the revised policy is up on the Giant Eagle website.

The changes are pretty much what I mentioned in this week’s Giant Eagle Matchups.

  1. One coupon per item(s) purchased as stated on the coupon with a maximum of 12 coupons per same 12 items purchased in a 24-hour period per Giant Eagle Advantage Card® customer.
  2. Stacking (combining electronic and paper coupons) of manufacturers’ coupons is prohibited.
  3. A maximum of two “like” Internet coupons will be accepted.  (I noticed that one doesn’t say within a 24 hour so maybe you could separate between transactions.)

My store is an independently operated store, so I think I will be stopping in later today to see if they have instituted these policies as well.

As I mentioned the other day, the first new limitation doesn’t really bother me, but number 2 and 3 are a bit irritating and will take some getting used to.  At least they are still doubling up to 99 cents.

So what are your thoughts on the new policy?  Will you continue to shop at Giant Eagle or will you shop elsewhere?

I visited GE a few days ago. I bought a People magazine. I had a GE coupon and a manufacturer’s coupon. The cashier would not allow me to use both, so I used the GE one since it was expiring soon and it could be doubled.

I just got back from the GE in Brentwood and my coupons stacked with no problems. The cashier didnt have to force them through or anything. They are a franchise store, so I’m wondering if they are opting out. I think next trip I’ll try to use more than 2 internet coupons and see what happens.

My store (Hempfield) in Greensburg, PA would not let me stack. I went to customer service after I saw that most of my e-offers weren’t on my receipt and they said that because I used the manufacture’s coupon it wasn’t eligible for the Giant Eagle discount as well :-(

Here is an email from customer service 10/6/11:
“Giant Eagle has stopped the practice of stacking coupons, so going forward, you will not be able to combine manufacturer’s coupons with e-offers.

Thank you for your inquiry, and if you have any further questions, please write me back or call our customer service line at: 1-800-553-2324

So, I feel like the paper coupons that the cashiers are “pushing” through are because you are no longer allowed to stack with an eOffer.

I emailed them on Oct. 6 to ask for the reason behind their decision to not allow stacking. I have yet to hear back from them. I think I stumped them. lol

I was able to stack the eoffers and the clipped coupons for the cookie mix, gillette shower gel and deodorant today. I suppose it’s going to be a wait and see to what is going to happen in the coming days. I now that I will continue to plan to stack until I am told otherwise at Giant Eagle. My thought is that they can always take the items off of your order.

I highly doubt they will track the 12 limit on your Giant eagle card however if they do have your husband get a giant eagle card and do two transactions. I have 4 separate cards that I use to get all the ecoupons I can.

Has anyone tried yet to use 12 like coupons with their card, and then do another transaction within the same 24 hour period using the same type of coupons? I’m wondering if their system is actually capable of detecting the coupon usage, or if it’s just to deter people from using so many coupons. I wonder if they will let you do separate transactions or if the card will actually block the use of more than 12?

I am going to email them now to ask if they would please explain the reasoning behind the second and third policies. I just don’t understand the logic of those two. The first one is understandable and fair.

I just sent Giant Eagle an email also in regards to the limit of two like internet coupons. Hopefully they will reconsider their position on this matter.

I am off to Giant Eagle now and I plan to try to the Gilette Bodywash deal and see what happens. If they won’t take the paper coupon, I’ll still get body wash for 1.00 so I’m okay with that.. I’ll report back with what I find.

I went to my Giant Eagle today and picked up the deodorant and Gillette. I was able to get them both using both the ecoupon and coupon, however for some reason the body wash coupon didn’t scan and the employee had to push it through.

My store still had the old coupon policy taped by the cash registers, but I didn’t have any internet coupons with me so I didn’t get a chance to check to see if the more then 2 policy was in effect yet.

I have a feeling that next time I go, they’ll have the new policy posted.

I picked up the body wash too. My coupons stacked, but my cashier also had to push the paper coupon through.

I actually got the body wash yesterday, BEFORE the new policy was in effect. The cashier also had to push the paper coupon through. So I think their system must not have this particular coupon loaded, and it’s not because of the new policy that it isn’t going through.

I jsut stopped and GE and purchased a pouch of BC cookiesto see what happened. They took the GE e coupon and doubled the mfg,

Dani same here. I didn’t get the Gillette’s yet since I was wanting to see what happened with something cheap first. :) I have a feeling everyone is freaking out over not stacking eOffers for nothing.

I usually 4 internet coupons, so this make life a little harder. My e-coupons were hit and miss half of the time anyway, so that’s not a huge deal for me. I dont even mind the limit on the manufacturer’s coupon since 12 is still a pretty high number. But 2 internet coupons? It just seems stupid and, yeah, I’m mad about it. I’ve sent a few emails lett ing them know as much. Oh, well. Maybe they’ll change it if enough folks complain.

I think we were lucky it lasted as long as it did. Most stores would not allow you to combine both.

The Extreme Couponing show is really messing it up for those of us who have been doing this for a while.

I used to be able to go into Dollar Tree and get multiple copies of the Sunday paper for my coupons. Now their papers are stripped of the coupon inserts. I don’t know if the local carrier or a store employee is taking them to sell, they are stolen, the newspaper is taking them to sell elsewhere or the insert publishers are holding back. I personally find that more irritating.

when I called the paper recently about coupons I was told that they don’t put inserts into papers that are in stores only in papers that are delivered to people.

I confirmed with a customer service manager that you can use eoffers and manufacture coupons unless the coupon states that you can’t combine it with others. She said the electronic coupon policy is for companies like saving star and some others. It also states it here that you can http://www.gianteagle.com/faq/Faqitem.aspx?categoryId=13&subCatId=64

Wow. That really sucks. As long as they double their coupons I will continue to shop there. If they change that I will be taking my business elsewhere. I guess it was only a matter of time since EVERYONE is now using coupons. Total bummer.

I’m going to Giant Eagle right now and see if I can still get the free body wash and deodorant. I also have a raincheck from last week for the pizza rolls and I wanted to get the crescents today. We will see how this works out. *fingers crossed*

I looked on the eoffers faqs and they still have this sentence :eOffers™ may be combined with other coupons and offers unless otherwise specified for the eOffer™ or other coupon, discount or offer. I did realize that most of the General Mill coupons prohibit use of other coupons with the manufacture coupon. I’m going to call customer service because that is a bit confusing

I think they intend it to because on the policy itself under eOffers it has electronic coupons in parenththeses.
